Wish List for Miss Ella Mae Hogue

Ella Mae is a strong willed, fiercely independent woman that is 84 years old, living with mild dementia in Central City, New Orleans. She owns her own home and lives alone. While she has friends and neighbors that check in with her, she still faces large challenges from day to day. Her home is in desperate need of repair, yet Ella Mae has no desire to leave or any family in the area to rely on. She is very passionate about staying in her home and together with your help we have already vastly improved her living conditions. Along the way, Ella Mae has been gracious and outgoing, making many new friends with the volunteers that have come to help us repair her home.

Things you can do to help:

-Donate a Home Depot card for various materials
(we need 35,000.00 in materials to finish Ms. Ella Mae's house)

-Sponser a volunteer

-A new king sized comforter

-Roofing materials

-Wall replacement for bedroom

-sub-floors replaced

*~*~Donations of any kind are needed for us to continue with this project, and will be deepy appreciated and acknoweged both on our website*~*~

I'm just writing to let everyone know that we always open to New Orleans residents to volunteer for free in Central City. We start work at 8am and end at 4:30pm. I personally am a long-term volunteer here at United Saints and can say that we do good work here. If You have any idea for projects (murals, service days etc) please let me know.

First World Naked Bike Ride in NOLA

Location: North America > United States > Louisiana > New Orleans
Address: Washington Square 2100 Royal St New Orleans, LA 70119
Start: June 13th, 2009 - 11:00 am

Confirmed Yet: Yes

Be part of the First World Naked Bike Ride in New Orleans! This event is a fun peaceful event held in many major cities, where everyone lets loose and has a good time.

The mission of the ride is to peacefully expose the vulnerability of cyclists, humanity and nature in the face of cars, aggression, consumerism and non-renewable energy. Every June 13, 2009 of every year, in 70 cities from 30 countries around the world, people will be riding naked to celebrate cycling and the human body. The ride demonstrates the vulnerability of cyclists on the road and is a protest against oil dependency. This will be the first annual World Naked Bike Ride held in New Orleans. Be there, as bare as you dare!

The route for the first annual World Naked Bike Ride will be short, Starting at Washington Square Park on Elysian Fields Ave. and Royal St. At noon on June 13, 2009, we will leave the park and proceed down Royal St. toward Canal St. We will follow Royal through the French Quarter until we reach Bienville St and turn right. One block over we will turn right again onto Bourbon Street back to Washington Square Park.

For more information on the local event see: http://sports.groups.yahoo.com/group/WNBR-NOLA/
or for the international website see:
http://www.worldnakedbikeride.org/

I just received this via email:
Hello everyone,

One week left before the ride and everything seems to be in place. We have a permit to ride and for those of you that are nervous about on watchers making remarks we have a police escort. That's right they will block all the intersections as we roll by and prevent confrontation. The officer that handles events in the French Quarter was very cooperative and pleasant. His OFFICIAL word is that nipples and genitals must be covered. Body paint on nipples would be considered covered. You should bring some type of covering just in case and sunscreen. That said, this is a "As Bare as You Dare" ride. I think that if we are peaceful, non aggressive and respectful we should not have any problems.

Everyone should bring their own refreshments for the after party. If you have friends that do not want to ride then convince them to come to be caretakers of our left belongings at the park.

I have purchased the permit, but cannot take on the cost of paying the Officers for the escort. Remember they will be there for our safety and protection. There will four policemen, two on bikes, that will need to paid at the end of the ride.. So if you have someplace on your body to carry $5.00 or so that would be most helpful. Next year we will push for Sponsors.

This ride belongs to the people, so in order to make it a success bring riders with you. Be creative. Make signs, paint slogans, paint yourself, paint your bike, paint a friend. Here are a few examples:

Notice me when I'm not naked
Less gas more ass
1 less car
We are traffic
Now can you see me?

It's a shame I have to even write this, but lewd behavior (touching oneself or others) or off color remarks to other riders will not be tolerated. Anyone not acting in the spirit of the ride will be removed.

This is New Orleans and we should be setting the example on having fun for the World Naked Bike Ride.

Thank you and I'll see you Saturday,
Sebren

Cayne Miceli's Cat needs home

Cayne Miceli was a NOLA resident for many years. She had a black cat named Salome that was a street rescue as a kitten and I am unsure of her age now. A wonderful but stressed kitty. Cayne had to evacuate for Katrina without Salome and spent the a few years trying to get her to come back home. Salome was severly stressed out and Cayne had just got a stable home in November and Salome was starting to grow her hair back(lost from nerves).
Cayne died this January, we tried to put Salome in another home but that did not work out because of dogs. I tried to take her but she does not want to be with other cats, won't share their litter or food bowls and if they eat out of hers she won't. She has started to loose her hair again and she needs a new home. She won't take kids or other pets. Thinking she needs to be a queen of a roost...

I am heading in to New Orleans on 2/23 - 2/26. Not much money.. I have a place to stay in Mississippi. I have not been to New Orleans but once before and it was not during Mardi Gras. I am going with another woman and no one else. Would anyone have any "Must Sees" or "Must Dos" or "Must Eats" ??
I am a burner at core, so touristy crap does not appeal to me, but the true heart and culture of the people of New Orleans does.

Any advise would be most appreciated!

Bike Ride to Chalmette Battlefield

I'll be pedallin' my bike from the Treme (Esplanade/Claiborne) to Chalmette Battlefield tomorrow in the early PM. From my place it's about 12 miles round trip, which is probably less than an hour either way. I ride a cruiser, so I won't be in overdrive. I'm happy to accommodate slower cyclists (or help train in the ancient art of urban cycling, if you're new to the game), and stop for coffee and/or beer and/or food along the way. I'm still just checkin' out the city myself, and this city rocks by bicycle!

Anyhow, I'll be doing it either way, but lemme know by noon-ish today (Thursday) if you're interested! Anyone know of some good stops along St. Claude, or near the battlefield?

Yo Mama's Big Fat Booty Band is truly one of my favorite bands and they are playing in Baton Rouge on Friday. I'm trying to get there from NOLA and will gladly treat anyone willing to drive me there to a tank of gas and a ticket in. I just moved here a month ago to work and have not really met too many people with cars so that is why I'm trying to hitchhike on the world wide web.
Not looking for a date, just a ride

2:00 pm Saturday 24 January
Starlight by the Park 834 N Rampart St New Orleans

the family needed to start earlier; thanks for understanding

they will have food for us... at the Starlight

**they have two of the three 15 year old suspects in custody; both have confessed, one being the shooter, both will be tried as adults.

Please come out and show your support.. Wendy was a wonderful person to have known as a friend.

John Birdsong

Wendy Byrnes was a friend, bartender that I've known ever since moving to New Orleans soime 8 or 9 years ago.. She was murdered last saturday evening by three 15 year old thugs in the french Quarter. Within 72 hours friends rallied and we posted some 500 to 600 flyers with police sketches 2 of the 3... were in custody.. both confessed one being the shooter.

we can't bring our Wendy back.. but we are going to see that the justice system does sometimes work. You will be truly missed.

Protesting sale of Cypress Mulch in NOLA this thursday

On Thursday, December 4th, join the Cypress Day of Action!

Levees.org will call on Home Depot, Lowe's and Wal-Mart to permanently end the sale of cypress mulch.
Healthy cypress forests are an important buffer to storm surge and can save New Orleans!

We will gather at the Home Depot at 1100 S. Claiborne Ave at 11:30am in Central City on December 4.

(This event is a coalition with Gulf Restoration Network and the Save Our Cypress Campaign.)

In order to properly defend New Orleans from hurricanes, we not only need safe federal levees, but also healthy, functioning wetlands and cypress swamps to bolster our storm protection. But even after the horrors of Katrina, cypress forests continued to be clear-cut solely to produce cypress mulch.
Join us at Home Depot at 1100 S. Claiborne Ave near the Earhart Blvd entrance on December 4 at 11:30am!
We will waive signs, hand out flyers, and deliver a message to the store manager.
Similar events will be occurring all over the country, but the New Orleans action is where it matters most!!!
Want to help but can't make the event? You can pick up the phone and let Home Depot know they should stop selling cypress mulch. Call 800-553-3199, choose option 5, and tell the operator you would like to leave a message for CEO Frank Blake. Say, "Please tell Mr. Blake to stop selling cypress mulch no matter where it is logged."
You can also call these big stores as well:

Lowe's - call 704-758-1000,
and ask to leave a message for CEO Robert Niblock
Wal-Mart - call 479-273-4000,
and ask to leave a message for CEO Lee Scott

You can make your phone calls any day Dec 1 - 4 during business hours. You do not have to wait until Thursday.....
Thank you!
Sandy Rosenthal

VOTE NO on the Master Plan

At the bottom of this Nov. 4th's ballot is the New Orleans Charter Amendment that is for a "master plan". This will damage our city even further.

Most neighborhood businesses are barely holding on to their zoning. If this plan goes through it spells the end of any new neighborhood business in this city. It spells the end of any new music clubs outside of "Permitted Live music zones' Like bourbon street and frenchman street.

Its proponents are the same groups that are there to oppose any new building or businesses in New Orleans. Having a job they don't care if anyone else has one. It takes the zoning code and drops it in concrete and this will discourage any new investment and lead to our further economic and population decline.

I am working on a campaign for this sleeper issue and over the next couple days will be trying to enlist help with it.

I am starting by compiling a list of businesses that are "non-conforming" to their zoning, essentially businesses that are in neighborhoods, serving that neighborhood but not officially 'zoned' for that location.

If you can send them down in a message or post them here I'd appreciate that a lot.

Came home tonight to discover a sweet orange tabby with the fluffiest tail who wants to adopt me. My current owner--a 16 year old grey tabby--is staunchly opposed. This kitten is clearly domesticated--so loving! But he needs neutering--very clearly a boy, if you get my meaning. Anyway, I'm looking for his rightful human or for a loving home for him.

love.

Hi all,

My name is Nikki. I'm a 24 year-old female who lived in New Orleans from 2002 to 2004, and I'm looking to come home in early December. I'm hoping to find a roommate in the Marigny. I'd be willing to move into the right place or to apartment-hunt together.

I've been doing the nine to five thing but hope to begin a new career teaching. I'm a smoker but never smoke inside-- it makes the house smell terrible. I have a really laid-back cat-- he won't even sit on your lap if you try. I'm neither terribly clean nor terribly dirty. I love to go out, but don't tend to bring the party home-- I like quiet as much as I like to party. I'm laid back and tend to get along with all types except high drama.

Message me if you know someone looking for a roommate.

My friend Marah is thinking of moving to the area, and is looking for a job to make that possible. She asked me to look for leads, and I thought someone in the Tribe community might know someone she should talk to.
Interview with Theresa Andersson

Melody, harmony, rhythm, timbre; these are the traditional building blocks of pop music. Yet although you will find them in abundance on Hummingbird, Go!, the new album by Theresa Andersson hardly sounds like conventional pop. That's because the New Orleans singer-songwriter chose to approach her craft from different perspectives before she even began composing. "I stopped thinking in terms of traditional songwriting," Andersson explains. "I worked on shapes, forms, and textures, scents and colors. Elements which are more earthy and organic inspired me." She would walk along the Mississippi River, or relax in her garden. As ideas emerged, she caught them in her butterfly net – or rather, on her laptop – and let them converge, then blossom.
NCEF! Media in Humboldt County Ca.(AKA NORTH COAST EARTH FIRST!), is accused of fraud and donation embezzlement. Caution! Do not support this lone wingnut's scam! Active and legitamate groups exist in the area. Caution! Do not be fooled by NCEF! Media and his fraudulent outreach. Shunka Wakan exists completely seperate from any active affinity group.

Read about how he perpetuated a lawsuit under the guise of EF! against a legitimate environmental nonprofit:
"Money On Trees"

Big cash nearly fell into Shunka Wakan's lap. Other Earth First!ers are kinda happy it didn't.

by Heidi Walters

As the jury trial for the civil suit Kathryn Miller v. the Trees Foundation puttered to a start last week inside Courtroom 3 at the Humboldt County Courthouse, Shunka Wakan — a key witness for the plaintiff — spent mornings sitting on the hard wooden benches in the long hallway outside the courtroom. During breaks, Miller's attorney Linda Mitlyng, would come out of the courtroom to join him. But otherwise, as other people and their legal affairs swirled around him in a warm, odiferous bath of humanity, Shunka sat alone. Or, sometimes, he stood alone, straight-spined, his small, stocky body swallowed by the huge, stiff blue suit out of which his newly shorn, razor-scraped bald head poked vulnerably — as if, at any moment, the suit could gulp once more and he'd disappear completely. Always, he clutched a paper folder with a wolf's face on its cover.

The North Coast Earth First! Media guru had shaved off his woolly rust-tinged brown hair and beard the night before jury selection started, after discussing it with attorney Mitlyng. Now, it took an uncertain moment to recognize him. Then, of course: Shunka's light blue eyes in the pink-pale face, Shunka's closed-lip smile, Shunka's trademark husky murmur, "Mm-hmm, for sure," in response to a comment.

In Courtroom 3, the amiable but no-nonsense Judge Christopher Wilson's domain, the fate of a $185,000 donation dangled. Would the plaintiff, donor Kathryn Miller, prevail in her claim that the defendant, the Trees Foundation, was not in fact the intended recipient of her generous gift? That Shunka Wakan's NCEF! Media Center and the treesitters were? Or would the Trees Foundation convince the jury that, in fact, the money was intended all along for Trees, with no instructions attached for funneling it elsewhere?

Richard Idell, left, who is defending the Trees Foundation against a lawsuit filed by Kathryn Miller, confers with Doug Wallace, community support coordinator for Trees. Photo by David Lawlor.

In her opening arguments, Miller's attorney, Mitlyng, said the case came down to "fraud and broken promises." "She believed [Trees] would hold [the money] in trust, for the benefit of North Coast Earth First!" said Mitlyng. The defense's attorney, Richard Idell, countered in his opening argument that the donation was an unconditional gift and Miller never wrote letters of instruction — as Miller claims she did. "Ms. Miller ... didn't do anything. She took the check [from her mother's estate] and flipped it over and wrote on the back, 'Payable to the Trees Foundation,'" said Idell.

Miller's claim sought the return of her $185,000, plus interest.

Out in the hallway, Shunka waited to tell his side of the story. Maybe he thought about the magical donation that never materialized, and now probably never would. Maybe he thought about the other times he'd been in this courthouse — dozens of times, along with other activists, often before Judge Wilson, answering to charges of trespassing and other forms of civil disobedience in the woods. Likely, he wondered when they were finally going to call him in to testify — it was taking forever in there. He'd even sent out an e-mail prematurely to the several hundred subscribers to his NCEF! online group erroneously announcing he would be first up to testify.

By the end of Friday's court session, Miller was still on the stand. Perhaps Monday it would be Shunka's turn. Whenever it was, he would be testifying on Miller's behalf; but he wasn't a party to the lawsuit. And in the end, after hearing all of the evidence, the jury would be determining who was telling the truth about intentions and letters of instructions. Shunka was just there to provide context and evidence in a contract dispute.

But to a number of forest activists, including a half dozen or so who appeared in the audience last Friday to watch the trial unfold, that context matters more to them than the legal questions. They say this lawsuit has placed a strain on the environmental community that could do as much damage as an ill-felled redwood that takes down other giants in its descent. They disapprove of the lawsuit, and they blame Shunka for it. And, they say, it's just another example of how Shunka has commandeered the North Coast Earth First! identity and used it for purposes that nobody else in the amorphous but consensus-driven local Earth First! movement has agreed to.

"For a lot of us, when we read about the lawsuit, this is kind of like Shunka on trial," said long-time forest activist Deane Rimerman last Friday, calling from Olympia, Wash. "And, to what extent is he worthy of that money?"

Kathryn Miller wanted her money to go toward saving trees, she said on the witness stand last Thursday. The slender 59-year-old was dressed in a pink print skirt and white sweater, with her gray-streaked dark hair pulled back into a neat, thin braid tinted slightly green. (Little did the jury know that Miller had spent the night in jail, in blue jail duds, and then had been "dressed out," in court lingo, in her street clothes before being escorted into the court by the bailiff. Miller had been arrested the week before, on Sept. 17, when she arrived in civil court for the pre-trial readiness hearing; according to the misdemeanor criminal charges filed against her, Miller allegedly had made annoying phonecalls to Barbara Ristow of the Trees Foundation all hours of the day and night.)

On the stand, Miller described how she became an activist. She remembered how, when she was a child in Orinda, her mother decided to stop spraying the beautiful oak trees on their property after reading Rachel Carson's Silent Spring. "And then, when my son was 9, we were watching the news on TV about the Chernobyl nuclear power plant meltdown. And my son said to me, 'I wish I'd never been born. I don't think I'll get to live a full life.'"

She protested the building of the Diablo Canyon Nuclear Power Plant. She started a peace action group in the late 1980s in San Jose. She did nonviolent protests at the Nevada Test Site. And in 1990, she came up with some of her fellow protestors to help set up the camp for Redwood Summer, and to take part in demonstrations. She's been on and off involved in Earth First! actions in Humboldt ever since, she said, including huffing in supplies for treesitters and huffing out their garbage. She'd also, at one point, bought a condo in Arcata.

In 2004, Miller sold her condo and bought an acre of farmland, already planted with coffee, in Guatemala. She put in fruit trees to shade the coffee. That same year, her mother, who lived in Sonoma, died. "The last time I saw her was in 2003," said Miller. "She told me when she died, she was going to leave me some money. I told her I'd use it to further my work for the forest. And she was pleased, because she loved the treesitters and the forest."

Shortly after learning of her mother's death, Kathryn Miller sought out Shunka Wakan in front of the food co-op in Arcata, where he "tabled" to raise funds for the North Coast Earth First! Media office — selling T-shirts, and stickers, offering pamphlets, accepting donations. She'd known Shunka for about five years, she said.

"I said to him, I was going to inherit some money: What was the best way to get that to the North Coast Earth First!?"

In the spring of 2005, Shunka Wakan was floating above the treetops. "I was so excited," the 32-year-old said in an interview a few weeks ago, sitting inside his tiny but colorful North Coast Earth First! Media office in Arcata, walls covered in art and topo maps — including one of Buckeye Mountain, where in 2000-2001, during the "Mattole Free State" action, Shunka and others hiked 14 miles through waist-high snowdrifts to save trees.

Kathryn Miller, he recalled, had come up to him excitedly as he walked along the sidewalk outside the Arcata Co-op and said, "I just donated $185,000 to North Coast Earth First!'"

She'd talked to him the year before about making the donation — she'd said she was anticipating an inheritance from her mother's estate, and she wanted to make a big donation to his group. He'd told her to make it through the Trees Foundation, which handled the NCEF! Media office's finances through an arrangement that had been established years ago. (The Trees Foundation is an umbrella organization formed in 1991 to assist smaller environmental groups. As a 501(c)3 nonprofit, it can accept large, tax-deductible donations on behalf of affiliates, and provide professional resources. And it can lead large campaigns, like the one to save the Headwaters Forest back in the '90s.)

Well, now she'd finally done it.

Miller and Shunka agreed to meet at Fiesta Café in Sunny Brae, so she could tell him how she wanted the money spent: She wanted, straight away, for someone to organize a mediated workshop for the local Earth First! activists on ageism and sexism, issues she thought were fracturing the movement. And, she wanted the bulk of the donation to help support the forest activists who blockade logging roads and hunker up in ancient redwoods to fend off loggers' saws.

Not long after, Shunka was on his way to have lunch with some folks from the Trees Foundation, where they'd talk about Miller's wishes.

"Our media outreach was going to get a big boost," Shunka said. "The donation would keep the EF! office going for many years. So I walked into the Wildflower Café feeling elated, thinking we got all this money."

Barbara Ristow and Doug Wallace of the Trees Foundation were there. "I was super excited," Shunka said, "and I said, 'This is great, this big donation. Isn't it wonderful?' We ordered food, and still I'm all excited, talking about the money, but I notice they're looking nervously at each other. [Finally], they said, 'Well, we're just shocked that you think this money was for you.' And I was like, 'I just met with the donor, and that's what she said.' And they're like, 'Well, let's go ahead and plan the workshop and deal with that later.' I remember that, because it put me at ease."

After that, Shunka said he gave Trees a list of people he thought might benefit from the mediator-run workshop. "Some were people I knew had beefs with me, but I was willing to bring 'em into the circle and talk about it."

According to some vague accounts, the workshop was a disaster. One person who was there claims that Shunka, at one point, pounded his fists on the floor, blustered, then got up and stormed out, yelling as he walked away. Shunka says that's overblown.

"The letter from Kathryn Miller to Barbara Bristow said she wanted the mediation to be a safe place, safe to be emotional," he said. "And I think people are saying 'I freaked out.' The freak-out reports are exaggerated. It's just part of this ongoing character assassination. People say I was 'red-faced.' But my face is naturally red."

In late 2005, while Shunka was in Seattle, a friend called him from Arcata to say a woman had come by asking for the office key. She had a list of equipment she wanted to take away. The friend didn't give her the key.

When Shunka got back from Seattle, he discovered his reimbursement funds from Trees had been "frozen." He also learned about a letter someone in the NCEF! movement had circulated for signatures and then sent to Mark Knipper, who handled the Trees Foundation transactions for the NCEF! Media office. It said, in essence, "We don't want Shunka running EF!"

"I called the Trees Foundation," Shunka recalled. "I was sick, it was the middle of the winter, I'm trying to table, it's raining, it's cold. And Barbara Ristow told me, 'You just need to have a meeting [with the other Earth First!ers] and come to a group consensus on what the Trees Foundation funding should be used for."

The meeting never happened — nobody could agree to meet, said Mark Knipper, also in an interview last week. Knipper is a social worker and a long-time activist who had been the contact person between Trees and NCEF! Media. "So it ate itself," Knipper said. "And although I'm former Navy, a mariner, I said I'm not going down with this ship. So I divorced myself from it ... and signed it all back to Trees."

The NCEF! Media office was dropped from the Trees Foundation altogether.

Shunka and the NCEF! Media office never did see any of the big donation. Miller didn't even know that, he said, until she phoned him up in the summer of 2006, more than a year after she made the donation, to ask about a guy named "Jungle," who had been reported as missing on the NCEF! hotline. Miller was spending much of her time in Guatemala now, where she was raising fruit trees; after she'd made her big donation, Hurricane Stan had struck — she spent the ensuing year mopping up the mess.

First, Shunka told her Jungle was still missing. Then he told her about the money.

"I said, 'Yeah, they told me it wasn't for us,'" said Shunka. "And she said, 'I meant for all of it to go to you guys.' She sounded real upset. And I was like, 'I knew it! I knew it!'"

Shunka tried to sue Trees in small claims court, but it went nowhere.

Miller filed a claim against the Trees Foundation on Oct. 5, 2006, in Humboldt County Superior Court, seeking the return of the $185,000 plus interest so she could distribute the money herself.

And if she wins? "She may just spread it out more," said Shunka. "She's got tree planting ideas. Maybe she could buy a grove. She'd maybe not give it all to Earth First! this time. It was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity that Trees blew for us."

On an uncomfortably hot afternoon last week, four forest activists who'd agreed to an interview for this story — Jeff, Shaggy, Sparrow and Farmer — sat on the ground at the Arcata Marsh next to a log bench on which a teeming crew of red ants worked a splintered notch. Someone had come along here in 1999 and carved a grouping of faces — bearded, grimacing, possibly mourning faces — onto the log and signed it Daniel. The carving had been drenched in red paint, and burnished by years of sitters.

"It kind of reminds me of the memorial for Gypsy," said one of them. "With the red paint."

Gypsy was the forest name of David Nathan Chain, who in September 1998, during an Earth First! action at Grizzly Creek, was crushed to death by a tree felled by an enraged logger. Farmer, actually, was there — he was just 16, but had a year of activism already under his belt. And Shunka was there — it was Shunka's first forest action.

Farmer, Shag, Sparrow and Jeff first made it clear that they spoke for themselves alone, although they participate in various forest defense affinity groups: Farmer works for the Mattole Wildlands Defense Group now, watchdogging the California Department of Forestry for new timber harvest plans, and keeping an eye on a Pacific Lumber Co. watershed analysis. Shag, who saw his first redwood about five years ago, helps keep the Fern Gully treesit village in Freshwater functioning. Jeff, who grew up in the high desert, and fell in love with the woods, works with the Nanning Creek treesit just outside of Scotia, as well as other groups. Sparrow, who was drawn to forest action because the cultural landscape was "like a folktale" he couldn't resist, is with the Fern Gully affinity group. These groups are all part of the Humboldt Forest Defense Association, a collective with a website but no formal structure.

The HFDA sprang into being six years ago — about the time the entity called North Coast Earth First! had essentially dissolved. It would take a book to describe that drawn-out dissolution — a book of lost causes, won causes, waning media interest, Judi Bari's death, Gypsy's death, ego-spurred squabbles, interpersonal catastrophes, a war overseas, hurricanes. And while the HFDA activists might still cherish the Earth First! name — the movement — in their hearts, it's now been further complicated by what you might call the Shunka effect.

"I still feel in many ways solidarity with the greater Earth First! movement abroad," said Farmer. "But in this county, in this climate, if you say you're with the North Coast Earth First!, many people associate you with North Coast Earth First! Media."

Shunka revived the North Coast Earth First! office around 2002. And he did what previous office managers had done — tabled, put out news releases, wrote articles for other publications. But it wasn't like the old days, in the '90s, when hundreds of people were getting arrested in forest actions and the jail support phone and legal resources were in constant use.

Shunka first worked in an office in Eureka, then later moved to Arcata. He called his outfit the NCEF! Media Center. For a time, he and other "affinity groups" tried to work together. But he alienated some people. He took over the North Coast Earth First! website. He controlled the North Coast Earth First! email list of 300 or more subscribers to the news alerts. He sent out press releases on his own.

"I felt the North Coast Earth First! Media Center was a unilateral effort on Shunka's part," said Farmer. Whereas, in the old days, "spokespeople were decided on by the group. And if you wrote an article it was passed by everyone. I feel Shunka appointed himself spokesperson at some point."

Many also claim they've been subject to a lashing anger from Shunka.

"I won't work with him because I pledge nonviolence in my actions," said Shag. "I don't believe he pledges the same thing. He has exhibited violent behavior towards me and towards other activists in my presence."

"He's a bear," said Jeff, making claw-fists with his hands.

But the sad thing is, all of this infighting probably has done nothing to help the actual trees. And the mediation workshop Kathryn Miller wanted didn't fix matters. Now, there was her lawsuit.

"When I heard about this lawsuit, I thought, the Trees Foundation does not deserve to be attacked in that way," said Farmer. "There's much bigger issues that need to be dealt with — with Maxxam and old-growth logging. ...If you look at Fern Gully and Nanning Creek (the Bonanza timber harvest plan), there's hundreds of old growth acres still standing whose fate is unclear."

Shag put it more bluntly: "If [Miller] knew Shunka and wanted to get the money to North Coast Earth First! Media, she should've given it to Shunka. But if she was trying to get it to treesits and forest defense, then the money went to the right place.

"My problem is this whole representation thing. There's people in the trees — how do you know who to get the money to, to help them?"

Shunka knows that a lot of fellow activists aren't happy with his role in the donation dispute. He also knows how some people talk about him and say he's hard to get along with. "I'm just standing up for the truth," he said. "And people don't like it. To me, it feels like a small clique of people who don't like me. I feel a lot of love and support in this community."

He certainly doesn't come off right away as someone who's angry, or who lashes out, or who locks the office and doesn't let people in. Why, recently, he helped a young woman hook up with the treesitters so she could learn the ropes. (Shaggy said that's proof Shunka doesn't have direct connections with the people doing direct action; but you can't deny it's a connection.)

It's probably a bad idea to ask Darryl Cherney, one of the founders of the local Earth First! movement, what he thinks of Shunka Wakan, whose real name is Jason Wilson. (Shunka tells a story of how he was named by a Lakota medicine man on the banks of the Cheyenne River in South Dakota in 1995. "Shunka Wakan," meaning "great dog," is only part of it. There's a secret part after that — altogether, his name means "the humble man called horse.")

"Shunka's a wingnut," Cherney said over the phone last Friday, sounding cheerfully vitriolic. "I have a 10-verse song about Shunka."

Here are the last few verses:

Who's at the co-op spanging a donation
Shunka, Shunka
Who's got a lawsuit 'gainst the Trees Foundation
Shunka, Shunka
Shunka, Shunka
Who's gonna keep on fighting the fight
Shunka, Shunka
With four of his friends at swimmers delight
Shunka, Shunka
Shunka, Shunka (Shunka voice: It's the last of the revolution)

There's no other word for it but "mean." But Cherney and Shunka have history — not all of it sour. Cherney said Shunka laughed when he heard the song, at least the first time.

"I met Shunka in 1998," Cherney said. "And I know he knew Julia ["Butterfly" Hill, whom Shunka had come west to find]. That was a good thing, helping Julia. That was good Shunka."

Cherney had even pushed for Shunka to go to Houston to talk with Charles Hurwitz, whose Maxxam Corp. bought out the old Pacific Lumber company back in 1985 and quickly became the forest activists' number one villain. Shunka went.

But now? "The current status of Shunka and me," Cherney said, "is that Shunka has sent me five or eight or nine e-mails threatening to sue me. Shunka is a joke."

Cherney can talk for hours about the problems he's had with Shunka over the years. His main point, though, is what has Shunka done for the trees lately?

"My question is, where's your topo maps?" he asked. "Where's your wilderness preservation proposal? Where's your lobbyist team in Sacramento?"

It has to be that, on some level, even the people in the movement who don't like Shunka understand somewhat where he's coming from. So he's emotional. Passionate. Perhaps he's caught up so completely in the cause he can't let go. Or, who knows — maybe he's a phony, like he accused Knipper of being back in 2005.

But being a forest activist comes with perils beyond the obvious physical ones.

"I'm really trying to have compassion for Shunka, even though he's kind of attacked us," said Susy Barsotti by phone from Laytonville a couple of weeks ago. Barsotti is president of the Trees Foundation board, and she says the lawsuit has held Trees hostage, unable to function fully. "I've been mystified and dismayed that he's participated like this in the suit. But Shunka witnessed Gypsy's death. And I think he may have post-traumatic stress syndrome. I don't think he's recovered from it. And that can affect your behavior."

A number of people mentioned this, actually, about Shunka. And he often refers to Gypsy's death himself. In an article titled "What Luna has taught me," posted on the website of Julia "Butterfly" Hill's organization, Circle of Life, Shunka writes: "I decided to commit to doing ground support after witnessing the death of David Nathan "Gypsy" Chain on September 17, 1998 ... I remember looking across the valley as we hiked up that day, seeing the rolling hills of forests and clear-cuts, and thinking out loud, "That's why we're here!" Seeing Gypsy's life taken from him, and then seeing the corruption and lies of the Humboldt County Sheriffs ... really opened my eyes to the situation our old-growth forests face."

Later, he did ground support for Hill in her second year in Luna. And in the same article on her website, something else Shunka writes indicates how ready he was to devote himself to a cause: "Being on the support team was the top priority in my life, and I was happy knowing that everything else revolved around when I'd be needed for the next supply run. I never felt lost because I knew what I was doing. That was a feeling I had not felt in years, between feeling dissatisfaction with life in college, and then more dissatisfaction with life as a minimum-wage worker after college. Before joining Julia's ground support team I was unhappy, even to the point of tears, wondering if my entire life was going to be a minimum-wage nightmare ...."

Pure devotion, without benefit of a little hypocrisy, could drive anyone batty. Deane Rimerman, the activist from Olympia who said it is Shunka who is on trial, said it's not uncommon for intense, stressful movements like Earth First! to produce an army of walking wounded. And he's been around, in forest actions up and down the coast, for long enough to know; he was the one, in fact, who "got the maps and led the first hikers up to the hill" to the Gypsy Mountain campaign and Luna treesit.

"In the forest activist movement, there's very little that's rewarding," Rimerman said. "There's a lot of post traumatic stress syndrome. All of us get it. Once you've been through the court process, and the jail process, and seen 1,000-year-old trees get cut down that you really cared about and thought you could save — it's devastating."

That alone, setting aside the troubles with Shunka, could explain the many rifts that have occurred within the local EF! ranks over the years. Josh Brown, who moved to Humboldt in 1995 right before the peak of the Headwaters campaign, said one of the unique qualities of Earth First! is that it "is primarily a youth movement."

"A lot of people that come through are young, are passionate — and it's a wonderful thing," he said. They get thrown into leadership positions quickly — and then they get burned out. Many move quickly on to other things. Brown stayed in longer than most. "When I left [in 2001], I was 30 years old. And I'd been a full-time activist since I was 18."

Paradoxically, said Brown, the youthful draw and the departure of seasoned activists leaves the movement with "no elders to kind of sit around and coach the [new kids]."

The movement also draws strong personalities, he said. Tenacious ones, too, like Shunka's.

"Shunka, I think he really does have a big heart," said Brown. "And I think he does care for the forest."

Last Friday, following the morning session of Miller v. Trees, a group of the Humboldt Forest Defense Association activists stood on the courthouse steps talking. The door opened, and Shunka walked out and down the steps toward the group. They didn't greet him. After a time, he tried to talk to one of them, Jeff. Jeff walked away. Shunka followed him, then stopped and talked to another guy. Then he stood alone again.

"Trees Foundation Wins"

October 11th, 2007

The jury in the civil case Kathryn Miller v. the Trees Foundation decided in favor of Trees, after deliberating all day Tuesday. (See "Money on Trees," Oct. 4).

Miller is the long-time forest activist who inherited a bundle from her mother and then signed $185,000 over to the Trees Foundation. In her lawsuit, she claimed she had intended the money to be passed through Trees to one of its affiliates, North Coast Earth First! Media, run by Shunka Wakan. She claimed she had made her intentions clear, verbally and in writing, and that Trees had agreed to the conditions, then broken its promise and kept the money. Trees denied making such promises, and said it had never seen any letters or heard of instructions to give the money to NCEF! Media. (Also, somewhat relatedly, in criminal court on Tuesday Miller pleaded no contest to charges that she had made annoying phonecalls to Barbara Ristow of the Trees Foundation.)

So, that's that. Now, there are only the pieces to pick up.

For Shunka Wakan — featured in last week's Journal as a central figure in a messy nest of infighting that has fractured the current ranks of local Earth First!ians — it could be a long, lonely patching together of lost friends and broken alliances. Not only did he and Miller lose their attempt to retrieve her donation, but now he's been banned from the North Coast Co-op.

Yes, that happened last week. It was Thursday, around 4:15 in the evening, and two activists with the Humboldt Forest Defense Association were tabling — hawking brochures and such — outside the Co-op. It's an activity Shunka himself has spent many a day doing in that very same spot, raising cash to pay for his NCEF!Media outreach work and other causes. And, well, these two fellows, Jeff and Farmer, were on Shunka's shit list, now. They'd spoken gently, but unfavorably, about Shunka's doings in the North Coast Earth First! arena — said he lashed out at people, said he commandeered NCEF! resources, and so forth. Here's a snippet of Jeff's account of what happened, which he sent to the NCJ in an e-mail on Friday:

"Shunka was removed from the Arcata Co-op yesterday after a scuffle with myself and another activist around 5 p.m. Well, he wasn't exactly removed, but APD was called. He was asked to leave after threatening to flip over the HFD donation table while stating he was 'like Jesus in the marketplace ...'"

Sue Coulter, manager of the Arcata Co-op, recounted on Friday how an employee walking by heard the argument and went inside to get her. "So I went out to talk to [Shunka], because it's not the first time we've had problems," she said. "Most of the time, he's fine. Most of the time, I stick up for him." One time, she said, she even called the police to protect Shunka after someone had threatened him. "But he gets into arguments. I tried to talk to him. I told him to leave. ... He was causing a scene, right by the door, and I can't have it. He refused to leave. ... I said, fine. I went into the store. He followed me into the store, and he was still yelling at me, 'Oh, now you're going to call the police on me.'" Coulter called the police, but Shunka left before they arrived.

Shunka, waiting in the courthouse for the jury verdict Tuesday, said Coulter did indeed ask him to leave and he did, indeed, refuse to. As for the HFD tablers, he said he merely asked them why they had Trees Foundation literature on their table. "I said, 'Why do you want to represent these people?'" And then, he said, "Jeff accused me of embezzling — he said this in public. He said, 'You've embezzled thousands of dollars from the Earth First! movement through the years.' And I complained to one of the employees who was walking by. Because that's serious, accusing someone of embezzling."

But Shunka said the whole thing's yet another attack on him. "I don't consider I was yelling. We were talking. I'm an emotional person, I concede to that. I speak from my heart. I don't scream at people. I would love to — but I don't."

In his email, Jeff with HFD predicted Shunka would leave town within weeks, if not sooner. But at the courthouse, even before the verdict, Shunka said he wasn't going anywhere.

"I'm just going to continue to run the Earth First! office and continue to call Humboldt County home," he said. He's also going to write a letter to the Co-op, complaining about how he gets scapegoated and booted out of there even when other people, he says, are the culprits. And, as for the Miller v. Trees case, he said, he and Miller may now take their complaint to another venue.

Currently I am working on a "Texas Recycle" project. I am customizing 26 gal. cans. There is a daytime photo of one in my album. The logos will be lit at night, like an "exit" sign. I am going to try to recycle at the major events in the Austin area (Houston, San Antonio, Dallas are close enough...+/- 3 hour drive). Anyhow, I think some of y'all should take on the project as well. Obviously there is still a problem with not recycling at major events.

Matt

Also, you will want to coordinate the recycling well in advance (at least 6 months methinks).

BUT WOULD LOVE LOVE LOVE if you'd be interested in coming down to help out, or could help spread the word.

Friday, June 6th (time and place to stil be determined)

Anyone know more ways to get the word out? Got a specific place you think needs it more than others? THANKS!

post from Jazzfest :Bob French interview w/Dr. John

Tuesday, May 06, 2008

Friday afternoon New Orleans drummer Herlin Riley stopped by New Orleans' WWOZ studio for Bob French's show with Dr. John, otherwise known as Mac Rebennack. The interview was already rolling when I started typing, and it was clear that this one would be off the charts. When Bob sends me a tape I can fill in the blanks, but here's what I was able to catch before heading off to Jazzfest:

"Between me being a bisexual polar bear and sitting between two extremely off the hook drummers, it makes me feel completely sane," Dr. John says. The studio explodes with laughter, and Bob discusses how their original interview was postponed when last Sunday's weather went downhill.

Mac: "I was trying to reach you the day I was meeting you at the Jazz Festival when it rained and you very skankily disappeared. I was very salty about this that you didn't answer your phone after leaving 25 kajillion messages on my phone cussing me out and I'm thinking what a guy.

The Bonnaroo festival got its title from Desitively Bonnaroo, a Dr. John tune. When Bob compliments his unique speaking style, Mac says, "I'm writing the official Dr. John objectionary on speaking." He later adds, "You see, I took a course. It's called tricknology by osmosis."

Bob: It took you an hour to get ready . . .

Mac: It's not easy for me to get up in a minute period. It's a very difficult procedure for me to get up.

The talk turns to politics and what is not being done to help New Orleans recovery, something Dr. John has not been shy about discussing since his work with Voices of the Wetlands shortly after Katrina. From the federal to the local level, he holds forth: "All the mayors since I was born, they all were jive. It's like a tradition." He adds, "Vote for a President that cares. Any one of them. Get someone that cares about people. No, it's like we gotta vote for another lemon. It's become like a fad."

Back to his musical history, Mac says, "I didn't graduate high school. My father advised me to take a job on the road. He said you're failing and you're not doing great and take a job on the road. That's all I wanted to do anyway." Talking about the chaos of the early tours, Mac says, "It had something to do with James Black. Having him room with Booker. Between the confused mentalism that he added to the band, he was playing the high hat in 7 or something. James was a master at hiding the 1 if you didn't know what you were doing in almost all of the confusements of it.

Bob: I just talked to Aaron Neville and so did you.

Mac: You tell the name of my hotel, why you don't tell Aaron's?

Bob: You got that other name.

Mac: I'm a sneaky secret kind of sucker. You see I use Dave Dixon method of staying below sea level. [Dixon gave James the name Bonzigge Darke, among other colorful tour names.]

As far as Dr. John's original band, Bob points out, "Everybody's dead but you."

Mac: No, Charlie's in Angola. He's doing 300.

After starting his career as a guitar player, Dr. John switched to piano when part of his finger was shot off while defending a fellow musician. As a band leader himself, Bob asks: How was it for you as a band leader, how many grey hairs did they put in your head?

Mac: We couldn't get to overseas gigs because of legalistical problems, including myself, but if you put it all together we had a good time, problems and all. You can't knock nothing because life in this business, we could walk out in the street and get clipped. They could just even slide it under us. We have this second and this petunia so I decided to come do this petunia with you. [Opportunity = Petunia / A Minute = A Pimento]

Bob: I really appreciate that.

Mac: I thought you would, George. [Mac calls Bob by his brother's name, singer and bass player George French, throughout the interview] Only now and then do you flare up about that. That's a very sterling quality that he possesses.

Bob: In another week you're going to be talking like you're English.

Mac: Another two seconds I'll be talking like Sigmund Freud. I could psychoanalyze the whole station in here. Are you kidding? I have my diploma.

Bob: It took you two hours to dress but you're here and we're glad to see you. You look good.

Mac: They say looks are deceitful, Bob.

Bob: We were talking for over ten minutes and you didn't cuss.

Mac: I decided before I came over here I was not going to cuss your ass out or anybody else.

Bob: You, Mac Rebennack, you can do what you want to do.

Mac: You, now you do more of what you want to do than I've got time to do. You do more ridiculous maneuvers in the time that you have to do them than most people.

Bob: Is that a compliment?

Mac: Of course.

Bob: Well thank you.

Mac: I've seen you in some other moves. I've seen you on the other side of the moon and the moon works on the noggin. They used to call New Orleans the psych ward without walls. Lunatic city. I thought you was the reason they gave it that name.

Bob: You cannot ruin my reputation.

Mac: Your reputation ruining preceded your disc jockeying.

Bob: Can you image they're hearing you everywhere? Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, San Diego, Kentucky. Remember Mississippi back in the day?

Mac: I remember quite a few gigs in Missississloppy. The governor was waiting for us at the hotel, George Wallace, and we were all thinking this is going to be some really ugly maneuver and he was passing out his book. I'm just some guy that's with the band. The bands never count in anybody's scopenology of the thing since day of Duke Ellington and Count Basey. What happened to those days? It became the singers that counted. That's why I used to resent front men.

Bob points out that Mac now is a front man and he agrees, "I don't resent myself because I'm glad to have a gig."

Mac then does a brief take on a staffer at WWOZ, speculating that he spends each night in a straightjacket and a room with a peephole and in the morning has to ask, "Do you think maybe I look sane today? What does he usually tell you Freddy? He never says the words you need to hear to have a permanent pass."

Bob attempts to get Mac to sit in on his set Sunday with Henry Butler. "I gotta get your booking agent's number, I've got 200 dollars I can spare."

Mac: "If you can add a dollar three eighty for cab fare, I may be able to arrive at the gig within 24 hours of the appointed gig time."

Bob: I'll call Arthur Q. Davis, Jr. [Quint] have him pick you up in a hearse, I mean in a limousine.

Mac: The hearse was fine, especially if it's one of them cushioned ones where I can put my mattress out on the back and lights on the ceiling.

Bob: Like Screaming Jay?

Mac: That's old school man, Jay did that show. I remember when he changed his show and it didn't work. He was in a cage and would dress up like Sherlock Homes singing to a guy in a gorilla suit outside of the cage, and they wanted to see him in a coffin again. He made some very sick records. Constipation Blues. That was one of his last big records.

Bob: You think you can extend your vacation?

Mac: I mean, this is my home.

Bob: I don't want to make you start crying on the radio.

Mac: You want to make me cry? Go ahead and try. If I'm lying I'm dying baby you ain't gonna achieve that. Except for Dumbo the Flying Elephant, or if you got a copy of . . .

Bob: I would never want to upset you sir.

Mac: I always felt like if you could cry it's a very relievingful thing.

Bob mentions that he's hoping someone documents the experience and Mac asks, "Document what?"

Bob: This cool language you have. And whoever is calling you just wasting your time because we ain't gonna answer the phone.

They expound on George Bush visiting New Orleans and "pretending to second line," and Mac discusses his concept of a citywide second line. Earth Day was offered, but "If we did it on Earth Day who's gonna notice it? That sucks. Then I cussed the wrong people out and that was the end of that but the fact is, we're supposed to have our own day. The whole City of New Orleans needs a second line and that's one of the songs on my new record. I'm plugging it.

Dr. John's song, "My People Need a Second Line" is featured in The City that Care Forgot, to be released on June 3. "I got dropped from one label to do this record. That's okay, I'm on another label and I don't care. I'd have done it for myself and I'd have figured some way to get it out there. I'm very ornery about it if I get something in my heart to do.

Songs by Bobby Charles and Rev. Goat Carson are on the cd, and Mac was going to work with the late Alvin Batiste and the late Willie Tee, but they have both passed away since Katrina.

Bob: I'm not doing any songs for you.

Mac: I didn't ask your ass.

Bob: You got that gris gris working.

Mac: Willie Tee had a tune about a crack in the liberty bell revamping the lyricals to make it about New Orleans and how the crack in the levee affect the city of New Orleans. It used to be like a little crack in the window pane.

Now it looks like you could fit your fat ass through there.

Much laughter in the studio.

Bob: There's nobody else I would let tell me this on my own show.

Mac and Bob talk about new Orleans drummer James Black, and how the last two years of his life he kept asking Mac to find him a copy of a record, "And never would tell me what record." He later found out it was Monkey Puzzle, an album by a young Ellis Marsalis. In a city of unsung heroes, Black was one of the great pioneering jazz drummers.

Bob: We sat in front of his house on Gov Nichols street one of greatest conversations in the world. He couldn't play the music he wanted to play. You know how talented he was. That was getting him. He was always pushing nervous things onto the cats. In some weird way James had a big impact on cats doing those things. So much intensity and force, you had to acknowledge it.

Mac: He really turned around bass players. In the second verse, just turned the beat around on them.

Bob: He used to try to do George like this. George would laugh at him "Right on, do what you're doing. You'll be back sometime." The rhythm section better be on top of it cause he would get you."

Discussing the Grammy-winning Dis Dat or d'Udda, Bob told Dr. John, "You looked for people who weren't hard to find, like Smokey Johnson is on here. Smokey's playing bass drum. Earl Palmer who is very very sick right now is the drummer as far as recording sessions are concerned, he's playing snare drum. Smokey's playing bass drum and they're playing that second line thing and it's killing. Then he recites The Monkey Speaks his Mind written by Dave Bartholomew. This is the man that never got his credit for all the million sellers, 22 million sellers in a row in the late 40s and 50s. People in this town in positions of authority don't even consider him. He gets totally disrespected. He's in his middle 80s, or past that, and he's knocking the walls down . . . He don't run behind nobody and do anything. He ain't gonna do that, never did it in his life. So I'm glad you did what you did because you got a lot of respect for everybody. Dave knocked it out, so did Smokey.

Mac: I always thought Dave was the baddest blues trumpet player in the world. Ain't nobody plays the blues like Dave. First session I ever saw on my life on Dumaine . . .

Bob: Cossimo [Cossimo Matassa's studio pioneered early rock and roll. He still runs Matassa's Grocery Store in the French Quarter.]

Mac: Dave's in the studio and I'm watching all of a sudden we get to the end of the song and he played to fatten the note at the end. It hit me without even knowing nothing about it he just opened he ending of the song up that's the kind of way Dave thought. He ain't gonna play no bunch of notes, but it's gonna be the right maneuvers. If you ain't saying something, just stop playing.

Bob discusses sound men and the need to work with the best. "Loud music is not pleasant for the ears."

Mac: How many deaf cats we know who played in rhythm section. "What kind of hearing aid you got Jake? Oh, it's 3 o'clock."

More laughter.

Bob: We gonna wind this up, you ready? I'm talking to Dr. John, born and raised Mac Rebennack. And we also . . . [it sounds like a someone is taking a cell phone call in the studio]. Would you wait a minute with your little nervous self? I'm gonna stomp your feet boy. We're talking to Herlin Riley. I'm about to commit murder on the radio. I'm gonna stab you in your heart. Anyway this is Bob French, gonna go out to the fairgrounds in a minute. I want y'all to hear the intro on this, and Dave Bartholomew is playing.

[Cue track from the Grammy Winning Dis Dat and D'Other.]

So there it is, as Mac would say. Two New Orleans legends holding forth on Jazzfest weekend. The City that Care Forgot will be released on June 3. Based on an early preview it's already my pick for album of the year, and Dream Warrior for best song. His Wade in the Water is on the New Orleans Musicians Relief Fund's ReDefine 8/29 charity download.
update on new orleans circus scene

I’m new to tribe and I’m trying to get the word out about what’s going on now in New Orleans for Circus Arts. The scene revolves around the Whirly Bones Circus Collective. We have a large studio just outside the french quarter and we offer free skill shares in circus arts and aerial classes five days a week! We offer hooping, acro, conditioning, juggling, yoga and clown lab. For fifteen dollars a month (yes, I said fifteen dollars) members can train and teach in the space. Next month the collective is putting on a showcase which includes acro-balance, aerial, juggling and more. Aurora Aerial is also based out of the space and will be holding auditions for an autumn run of shows on September 1st. There is a new aerial yoga class at Swan River Yoga Shala uptown as well. To learn more, visit our myspace at www.myspace.com/whirlybones or www.myspace.com/ravenhinojosa. Come check out or join our growing circus scene!

Collecting dresses, etc. for Hope Haven's Prom

Now that we've got Earth Month behind us, my employer and I are on to our next community endeavor. We are collecting new & gently used special occasion dresses for Hope Haven's Prom, an event for the residents of Hope Haven sponsored by St. Elizabeth's Guild. Hope Haven is a residential treatment facility for children and adolescents who have mild to serious behavioral, educational, emotional, and/or family problems. The prom is attended only by those who have earned it by exhibiting good behavior.

We're collecting the following items for the girls:

* New or gently used formal or semi-formal special occasion dresses. Volunteers will alter the dresses for the girls, but all sizes are needed. The girl's ages range from 10 to 18.
* Prom-appropriate jewelry, handbags, hair accessories & gently used dress shoes
* New hosiery & special occasion undergarments (slips, strapless/convertible undergarments)
* Perfume, toiletries & new cosmetics -- travel sizes are great!

The boys attending will receive a gift certificate to redeem for a tux/suit rental, but we can still use the following:

* Toiletries & cologne

Donations will be accepted through the end of May. You can drop off your donations at Salon Couvie - 2701 Airline Drive, Suite M., Metairie, 70001 (corner of Airline & Labarre Road, directly past the Causeway). If you cannot find us, call us at (504)835-2700. We're in the Rouses shopping center between Smoothie King and Bella Brew (who has awesome coffee).

Thanks in advance to all those who help!

Heya tribers, where y'at!

Im coming down to Jazz Fest for the full two weeks and I would love to volunteer somewhere with rebuilding efforts. I have found in my search so far that many organizations are requiring at least a week commitment and Im looking to help out from Sunday April 27th through Wednesday April 30th. Ideally Id love to be doing some sort of work that directly affects the local musicians but at this point Im open to anything. Is anyone else out there also volunteering during this time? Any advice is much appreciated. Cheers!

Wondering if any of you out there in the intraweb-land are planning on going to the Tennessee Williams Festival at the end of the month.
If you are, come support your local student readers on Saturday the 29th. I will be reading with some other students from universities around the area. It's kind of exciting. kind of very exciting actually.

Even if you don't come by to see us I hope you guys have fun and enjoy the event. I've always had fun there and would love to meet up with some fellow Tribe-sters who are also literary geeks.

Friends of Friends charity?

I want to purchase a couple of lithographs from: http://friendsoffriendsneworleans.org/

The problem is that there's no secure server or paypal option, or anything. They simply want you to mail in a check. We emailed them last night to see what sort of response we'd get, but so far, none. Does anyone know if this is a legitimate charity, and actually has these artworks to sell?

We want these two: http://friendsoffriendsneworleans.org/Art_Images02.html and the issue is that we had written to the artist's daughter-in-law inquiring if she knew if any of these were available to purchase, before we found this site, and she didn't mention these at all ... so we're wondering... You'd think she'd know if there were signed and numbered lithographs out there.

Can anyone help?

Hell, I haven't followed the NBA in years, truth be told, but the Hornets really do need more locals at the home games to extend their contract until 2014.

They've been doing pretty well this season, too.

The Saints season is over, so yeah, like come show support for that _other_ professional team, alright?

I usually come back every six months and this last trip in early December was the first one which I felt really positive about. Things are swinging again and the city is so much lighter and people are getting on with their life. I lead three activities with the Lyceum (which I started back in '03) and they were all full of great people: cordial. friendly, eager to grow. I now love Baltimore in a different way, but there is no replacing the magic of New Orleans.

Hi all -

I have a couple of possible job opportunities in New Orleans, but my spouse is reluctant to move there -- partly because he had bad experiences in the South back in the '70s, and partly, of course, because of safety concerns.

Can you help me convince him that we'd be happy there? If it matters, we're 50-something white queers with a strong dash of aging-hippie. I'm a writer and academic (or soon-to-be-academic), he's retired on disability but does a lot of neighborhood organizing.

Thanks,
J

HI, I have an aerial performance coming up at an event that has a Mardi Gras theme. I'm having a hard time finding music that'll work, so if anyone would like to suggest some music I could check out. I love the upbeat mardi gras new orleans stuff, but it doesn't work so much in the air. I need something that has that flavor and will fit the theme, but with a slower rythym, emotional depth, and more fluid sort of flow that I can dance to in the air. Any suggestions appreciated, thanks, Laura

Can anyone tell me how to battle the hard water stains in the bathtub? My arms are sore from scrubbing and scrubbing. The only solvent that works is Zap, but I have to still scrub with a hard scrubbing pad. Also what is with the dust? It's sticky!!!!!! Thought maybe someone from here knew a secret.

Cool Hotels in the Quarter

Hi all,
I'm coming down to NOLA in March for a conference - first time ever I actually get to be there on business! In the past I've stayed at the St. Charles Guest House and condos nearby on Prytania, but we'd like to be in the Quarter as my conference is at the Sheraton. Any suggestions for a sweet, smaller moderately-priced hotel or B&B?
Thanks!
Tanya

Need fire performers for paid gigs...

Looking for fire performers for paid gigs...

Some of you already know... but for those who don't,
I ran a fire performance company on the west coast , which mutated and evolved into a fire performance company here (around 2000) when I taught for the circus school... and evolved again to provide performers for the southeast.. based out of Atlanta and Charlotte for some time...

Now.. I'm back in New Orleans, have paid gigs and a few performance projects to launch and am looking for new talent as I'm not getting any younger.

There is an amazing gig this weekend, but I need to meet with the new performer before then/ You will be performing with one other female and two safety crew on main stage of a huge event in New Orleans this weekend in the middle of a pyrotecnic finale.. (more details to follow)

So who here is up for it? Let me know,...
Cameron

How do the locals feel about tourists these days?

I'll be visiting in a few weeks. I've never been there and I wish I had come before Katrina, but I'm happy to be coming now. Like everyone else I watched all of the news stories and read the posts here on tribe. I lost track of a friend for several month and recently relocated him (in Thailand of all places!). I suspect that being there and seeing it first hand will make the whole thing even more real/personal.

I know you're struggling to rebuild... are tourists a help (economically speaking)? Or are we in the way?

I noticed that nobody responded to Azura's post asking for recommendations last month. Is that because you have none or your sick of tourists in your face? (BTW, I live on Maui. Lotsa tourists here. Sometimes I'm thankful for them and the jobs they create, sometimes I wanna scream at them...like "pull *off the road* if you want to watch the whales!!")

One way tickets to New Orleans

A woman I know who works with in mental health is hearing more and more about how facilities and organizations from around the state and the country are buying their more troublesome clients one way tickets to New Orleans on a bus. Not people who lived here prior to the storm but people they are sending here so they can get lost in our city and make trouble for us.

Have any of you run into this? Do you have any stories to tell about it? Does anyone know any laws governing this sort of thing so we can raise the issue to the national media.

My strong feeling is that unless you have the ability to take care of yourself and the finances to see you through at least 2 months you should not be relocating or relocated to New Orleans. This is no town for anyone who needs help.

Support The Gulf Coast Housing Recovery Act

The Gulf Coast Housing Recovery Act would provide homes for returning residents

Hundreds of ACORN volunteers helped families get back into their homes.

Two years after Hurricane Katrina struck the Gulf Coast, damaging a million homes in four states and destroying 300,000 residences, at least 106,000 mostly low-income families remain displaced.

Although billions of dollars have been allocated to house evacuees, little direct assistance has reached homeowners or created new rental housing.

Instead, ACORN - helped by hundreds of volunteers - has gutted 3,500 New Orleans homes without any kind of government assistance.

The Gulf Coast Housing Recovery Act, S. 1668, cosponsored by Sens. Christopher Dodd (D-Conn.) and Mary L. Landrieu (D-La.), would mitigate the problems faced by evacuees struggling to return and provide a variety of housing solutions necessary for the region’s renewal.

Almost three-quarters of the homes destroyed by the storm were affordable to low-income families. On the storm’s second anniversary, 65,000 families are still living in FEMA trailers and manufactured homes and 11,5000 families are continuing to receive Department of Housing and Urban Development disaster assistance, according to the National Low Income Housing Coalition. The return of these families is vital to the Gulf Coast’s economic recovery.

The Gulf Coast Housing Recovery Act of 2007, now in the Senate, would accomplish several important tasks to jump start progress. To help homeowners, the act authorizes funds to cover the Road Home shortfall, allowing homeowners to rebuild, and requires the Federal Housing Administration to use pre-hurricane credit histories so storm survivors can become homeowners again.

To help those who were renters before Katrina, the bill designates $1.7 billion in FEMA funds for rental housing, authorizes the repair and rehabilitation of public housing and supplies replacement housing vouchers. FEMA is required to transfer funds to HUD to provide rental assistance to families still in need of temporary housing, and the State of Louisiana is required to use $55 million for community development pilot programs.

Finally, the Gulf Coast Housing Recovery Act establishes much needed accountability so that funds are used properly, setting up monitoring and reporting requirements for FEMA, HUD and the states to prevent fraud, waste and abuse.

When Congress returns to Washington after Labor Day, the Senate should approve the Gulf Coast Recovery Act of 2007 to help residents finally return and begin rebuilding their lives.

Take action now to write your senators, tell them to vote for S. 1668.

my very wonderful and amazing friend is chairing a scholarship/grant charity benefit for the arts in New Orleans on 9/8/07.

she desperately needs two fire dancers.

while there is no pay for the performance being that it is a charity benefit, you will get free room and board for the weekend, as well as be able to have a great time seeing all the many different kinds of performers that will be there, and receive a load of appreciation from those hosting the event. i'd go myself if i was better than my current amateur status.

if you or anyone you know may be interested, please message me and i will send you her contact info.

thank you!

Coming to NOLA end of August for an overdue Vacation

Hi everyone,

It has been too many years since I've had a chance to get back to NOLA for a visit. I miss the town, the people and the downright friendliness of everyone. I'm a professional belly dancer in California and it would be fun to hook up and check out the local scene.

Also can anyone tell me what fun/cool stuff is going on the week of Aug 21st to the 28th? Good Music Blues, dance, clubs etc. I want to know where *the place to be is*.

Thanks,

Azura
