I want to purchase a couple of lithographs from: friendsoffriendsneworleans.org/
The problem is that there's no secure server or paypal option, or anything. They simply want you to mail in a check. We emailed them last night to see what sort of response we'd get, but so far, none. Does anyone know if this is a legitimate charity, and actually has these artworks to sell?
We want these two: friendsoffriendsneworleans.org/Ar...tml and the issue is that we had written to the artist's daughter-in-law inquiring if she knew if any of these were available to purchase, before we found this site, and she didn't mention these at all ... so we're wondering... You'd think she'd know if there were signed and numbered lithographs out there.
Can anyone help?

Re: Friends of Friends charity?
Wed, July 11, 2007 - 8:08 PMDid you e-mail the website and get any info? Ask them to provide you with their FEDERAL 501c3 number. I looked them up and found nothing on them through several websites that allow you to check for legitimate non-profits. They registered as a Louisiana business however I found nothing on them federally (they may or may not be a registered non-profit.) They do not have an office and registered under Barbara Hoovers home address..... It also looks like the web page may be old and is set to expire very soon. (the 17th)
upon further inquiry I found this:
Charter/Organization ID: 36260378N
Name: FRIENDS OF FRIENDS, INC.
Type Entity: Non-Profit Corporation
Status: Active
Mailing Address: C/O BARBARA HOOVER, 2449 BURGUNDY ST., NEW ORLEANS, LA 70117
Domicile Address: 2449 BURGUNDY ST., NEW ORLEANS, LA 70117
File Date: 08/30/2006
Registered Agent (Appointed 8/30/2006): BARBARA HOOVER, 2449 BURGUNDY ST., NEW ORLEANS, LA 70117
Director: BARBARA HOOVER, 2449 BURGUNDY ST., NEW ORLEANS, LA 70117
Director: LESLIE SMITH, 636 RACE ST., NEW ORLEANS, LA 70130
Director: DR. RICHARD ALLEN, 1930 ST. CLAUDE AVE., NEW ORLEANS, LA 70116
I would wait to see if they are still in operation and even legitimate (past the state incorporation phase) before I send them anything. It is odd they would not include telephone info and it may just be a great idea that never materialized... cool artworks though! -

Re: Friends of Friends charity?
Thu, July 12, 2007 - 12:14 PMYes, we wrote but as of yet have not received a reply of any kind. I'd like to know what happened to these artworks? Or is they exist. If they had them, where are they and why wouldn't they want to sell them? Very strange. No, we won't be sending a check. I want a traceable and verifiable transaction - credit card or paypal.
Thanks for your sleuthing! If anyone else knows of anything we'd love to know. We just want the damn lithos! -

Re: Friends of Friends charity?
Thu, July 12, 2007 - 11:53 PMYou could write them a letter telling them to contact you, as you are "interested"... ???
But I don't know how THAT helps. -

Re: Friends of Friends charity?
Fri, July 13, 2007 - 1:57 PMwasn't Barbara Hoover once a DJ on WWOZ? She still might be. That might be a way to get a response. More likely it was a great idea that got a website but never really pushed off the starting block. -

Re: Friends of Friends charity?
Sun, July 15, 2007 - 7:41 PMFine, I accept it didn't get off the ground, but WTF happened to the artwork??? She must have had it in order to list it on the site, no? Doesn't someone want to sell it? And why isn't email being monitored?
The first response on the thread gave an address for her so we got a home phone number from that using the good ol' net. We'll give her a ring at home. See what's up....
I'll check the radio station. Thanks all! -

Re: Friends of Friends charity?
Sun, July 22, 2007 - 10:40 AMSo we've still been working on this and although we get more information, we seem to get no closer to getting the lithos or even getting anyone who knows anything real about them (like, do they exist and where are they) to talk to us. The email to Barbara got us nowhere; we then called Barbara's home number and she hasn't returned the call. We called the vet whom she had named as a charitable recipient on the website - the receptionist said they all knew Barbara well, but the vet has yet to return the call. Very bizarre. Apparantly, these lithos must not be in her possession anymore (if they ever were) or I'm pretty sure she would have wanted to get a couple off her hands (ie: SELL SOME). But it would be good to just know for sure if this is a dead end or not.
Well, you can't say we haven't tried.... -

Re: Friends of Friends charity?
Sun, July 22, 2007 - 11:47 AMWell, it hasn't even been two weeks. I'd say slow down and consider the heat.
This _is_ New Orleans, ya heard?

Re: Friends of Friends charity?
Sun, July 22, 2007 - 7:56 PMHaha. Um. OK.
So how long does one need to be courteous and return calls - heat or no. :) Or does the sun melt yer phones... -

Re: Friends of Friends charity?
Sun, July 22, 2007 - 10:33 PMThe heat melts our energy, making dealing with anything not absolutely essential a huge pain. And there's lots of essential business to deal with: getting to a grocery (if they're living over in the 9th upper or lower) means a drive across town; getting the huge pile of debris that people keep dumping on your street picked up means a long wait time on the phone with people who, when you do finally talk to them, don't know who you need to call; getting your mail delivered or picked up still doesn't seem to happen on a daily basis; getting electricity or an Internet connection (although much improved) still can't be counted on in these intense summer downpours; and lots of stuff is going on to keep us from getting any of this done:
The owner of Snug Harbor and Port of Call, who was a huge supporter of live music--esp. jazz--just passed away, and there's been lots of parties in celebration of his life and his influence on the city. Tons of musicians, as a result, are in town and putting on rocking shows all over the place.
And since our energy bills are as out of control as the heat, the only place we really want to be is at a bar or a restaurant where they can afford to run the AC.
And of course, all of this assumes that these folks are even in town, which most folks aren't. They're at the beach where it's okay to be hot or somewhere else where summer isn't so unbearable.
Granted, I don't know these folks. Maybe they are flakes or scammers or worse, but I'd give them at least a month before I drew any conclusions.
good luck.
love.

Gee, that's too bad. People who help out the local musicians anywhere are heros, but especially in NOLA.
Incidentally, we just saw Dr John (who's cover art happens to be the art we're a-searching for) at an outdoor free concert in these here parts just last week (or was that two weeks ago). We've been trying to catch him for years, but kept missing him. Hopefully, we'll get to see him on his own turf before too long - we're overdue for a visit. And, yes, we know full well what the heat is like down there. Our fist visit coincided with a heatwave that was unseasonably scorching - or so the locals told us. All I know is I've never felt air that hot and thick. Wild! Wild and infernally, viscerally, nasty (but in a good way!) We'll always have very fond memories of that heat and our first taste of NOLA. -
